EMBLEMA I.

Principium in tereti quaeris quicunque figura,
Principium invenies hc ubi finis erit.[1]
Sic Christum vero quisquis revereris amore,
Quae vitam hora tibi finiet, incipiet.[2]

You who seek a beginning in a rounded figure, will find the beginning where the end will be. Thus if you worship Christ with love, the moment which finishes your life will [also] begin it.

Notes:

1. A loose reference to Apocalypse 1:8: ‘ego sum principium et finis dicit Dominus Deus...’ (I am the beginning and the ending, said the Lord God).

2. The last two lines are absent in some copies of this edition.
