Layout

113 emblems: the title, woodcut and Latin poems are disposed on the versos, in fundamentally the same arrangement as the earlier Latin-only editions, while the corresponding French translations appear on the facing rectos. The longer poems call for variations on this arrangement. A number of significant changes are made to the woodcuts for emblems by the removal or addition of iconographic features. The ‘Honey Thief’ woodcut is here divided to allow for the insertion of 2 French translations for each of these 2 emblems. Latin text in ‘Aldine’ italic, 84 mm for 20 lines; French text in bastard gothic, 136 mm for 20 lines.

GUL SM23B: N3vo-N4ro. Actual page height: 157mm.

Remarks

This edition can distinguished from the later 1536 Latin/French edition (F.006) by the use of lower case in the date on the title. The order of the editions is indicated by damage to various woodcuts, and to the mark on Q4vo.
