Layout

201 emblems without decorative frames. This edition follows the 1549 French editions (F.026-027) very closely, adopting exactly the same order, although 16 further em¬blems are here illustrated, bringing the total to 181. Surprisingly, despite the avail¬ability of the appropriate woodcuts, the same 7 emblems still use duplicate cuts and 'Abstinence' (D031) retains its earlier woodcut, although the later 'Tree' woodcuts are used. 'Sur L'obliance du Pays' (D115) is here unillustrated; it must presumably have been broken or lost, because in later editions it is replaced with a fresh woodcut. With a few exceptions, each emblem begins on a new page. Short prose commentary beneath the verse. Verse in italic, 82mm for 20 lines; commentary in roman, 66mm for 20 lines.

Remarks

There is a slight difference of vertical spacing between the two states of the title, accounted for by the variation in size between the marks of Rouille and Bonhomme.
